2012 Grenada Sailing Festival

More Caribbean Races on Horizon

CLEARWATER, FL (March 16, 2012) – The 2012 Grenada Sailing Festival, which took place January 27-31 at Port Louis Marina on the island of Grenada in the lower Caribbean, ended in celebratory fashion for Sea Hawk Paints, the family-owned paint manufacturer in Clearwater, Florida. Sea Hawk sponsored one of the sailing yachts, Slippery, which was captained by Peter Peake, owner of Peake Yacht Services, the Caribbean’s largest and most comprehensive haul-out facility in Trinidad. The yacht finished in second place overall.

Slippery, a 2004 37-foot custom design by Reichel-Pugh and built in South Africa, won both races on the first day, in spite of her older main and headsails. On the second day, she managed a second in the first race but was down from first overall due to wind damage on one of the older sails. Slippery needed two firsts on the last day to maintain her title. The night before the last day's race, “Fish”, a crewmember and the owner of the Soca Sail loft in Trinidad, did some rush repairs on a head sail in order to participate in the next day's race. The day started with Slippery winning the first race. During the second race, Slippery was first at the top mark, but on the way up to the windward mark, another sail ripped, taking its toll on the yacht’s performance. Slippery only managed a sixth in the second race, which brought them to second place overall for the regatta.

“There are cheaper antifouling paints on the market, but when I suggest using Sea Hawk’s Islands 44, and my customers agree to use it, they always come back and ask for it the next time they haul out,” said Nicholas Gomes, Director/Operations Manager of Peake Yachts in Trinidad, who also sails Slippery in Caribbean regattas. “Even between races, when the boats are hauled out and stored ashore, when we put them back in the water, their bottoms stay clean,” he said.

Sea Hawk-sponsored Slippery also sailed in the recent Heineken Regatta, and will compete in the BVI Spring Regatta, March 26 – April 1, as well as Antigua Sailing Week, April 29 – May 4.

Sea Hawk Paints Awards Grand Prize to Billfish Tournament Winner

CLEARWATER, FL (February 20, 2012) - Despite less than hospitable weather, January 25-29, 2012 saw an influx of visitors, anglers and boats as they gathered at the Grenada Yacht Club in the southern Caribbean for the 43^rd annual Budget Marine Spice Island Billfish Tournament (BMSIBT). The tourney included 50 boats and 256 anglers from as near as Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados and St. Lucia, and as far as Curacao in the south, the USA, Scotland and Australia. Ninety billfish were captured, and all were released.

This is the third year that Sea Hawk Paints participated as a sponsor for the Billfish Tournament. The Clearwater, Florida paint manufacturer awarded four gallons of antifouling paint to Gordon Dalgliesh of Abracadabra, the winning boat from Trinidad & Tobago, which released a sail, a white and then a blue (Grenada is recognized across the Caribbean for being the best place to catch three species of billfish in one day). For good measure, they later added another sail to end day two with 1700 points, winning the coveted Grand Slam prize of a dinghy and Tohatsu outboard, presented by Budget Marine, in addition to the Sea Hawk paint.

CLEARWATER, FL – (August 29, 2011) New Nautical Coatings, the 33 year-old Clearwater, Florida-based innovators of Sea Hawk antifouling paints, has just been awarded finalization from the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) to register Biocop TF™ antifouling paint in Australia. The APVMA is an Australian government statutory authority established in 1993 to centralize the registration of all agricultural and veterinary chemical products into the Australian marketplace.

Biocop TF was developed by Sea Hawk Paints as an alternative to tin-based antifouling paints to protect against the harshest marine environments and provide maximum protection. Sea Hawk Paints Guidelines for Treating Oil Contaminated Bottom Paint

Oil on antifouling paint inhibits the ability of the coating to release the biocides and thus further prevent fouling, or growth from occurring. Oil contamination may also lead to poor adhesion of existing and new bottom paint resulting in flaking or pealing of the coatings.

For heavy oil contamination of antifouling paint the best method to use when treating the bottom paint is to use Sea Hawk Marine Paint Stripper to remove all the pollution and the oil contaminated bottom paint, then scrub the substrate using Sea Hawk S-90 DeWax and Cleaner and a coarse Scotch-Brite pad. Rinse with fresh water. Repeat until the surface is clean and there is no evidence of any oil and water does not bead or separate. Allow the surface to dry thoroughly prior to repainting with bottom paint. The same process is recommended on metal boats however to avoid corrosion the metal substrate should be prepared by grinding or blasting after the cleaning process and prior to priming. To aid adhesion apply a Marine Epoxy Primer such as Sea Hawk Tuff Stuff High Build Epoxy Primer per label instructions.

For light oil contamination of the antifouling paint, powerwash and then use a household detergent with water to scrub off any pollution. Repeat as necessary. Then scrub using Sea Hawk S-90 Dewax and Cleaner and a coarse Scotch-Brite pad and rinse thoroughly with fresh water. Let dry prior to applying new bottom paint. Ablative and Self-Polishing bottom paints such as Cukote, Biocop TF, and AF-33 may be re-launched without repainting assuming the film thickness of remaining paint is adequate (2-3 mils dry after cleaning and scrubbing). Hard modified epoxy paint such as Sharkskin and Tropikote, should be repainted if the coating is exposed out of the water for more than 72 hours. Due to the aggressive nature of the cleaning and scrubbing, it is recommended the any boats re-launched without a new coat of bottom paint be scheduled for the next application in 6 months.

NOTE: Be sure to remove all oil contamination: Sanding or sand blasting a surface that still has oil on it may drive the oil into the surface and cause a loss of adhesion of the subsequent coats.

Oil contaminated waste water and bottom paint should be collected per local, state and Federal guidelines, local authority regulations and/or Clean Water Act requirements. Collecting the water and the emulsified crude will prevent spreading of contamination. Crude and solvent contaminated wipes, application and removal supplies must also be properly disposed of according to local regulations.
